Message from the Commissioner

There is a message in this month’s Bulletin from Secretary Maria Contreras-Sweet of the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency on the current energy challenge in California.

The Department of Financial Institutions has joined the Governor and other state departments in reducing our energy consumption by a minimum of 8 percent.

Your efforts to reduce the demand for electricity will make a real and immediate difference.

Donald R. Meyer, Commissioner of Financial Institutions

California’s Energy Challenge

By Maria Contreras-Sweet

The energy challenge facing California is real. California continues to experience electrical shortages and rolling blackouts throughout the State. To reduce the risk of power outages, the most important thing we can do in the short term is reduce our demand for electricity and use energy more efficiently.

The Governor and leaders of the California Legislature are working with utility companies, generators and consumer groups to fashion long-term solutions for reliable and affordable electricity. The State has already implemented a plan to reduce consumption by a minimum of 8 percent across the board.

And you have an important role to play right now. We in California have the power of nearly 35 million people and the sixth largest economy in the world. By reducing our electricity demand, we can help avoid shortages and lower energy bills. All you have to do is FLEX YOUR POWER.

The Business, Housing and Transportation Agency and its 13 departments have implemented these simple energy-saving features, and we encourage you to do the same:

For more information, visit the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency Web site at www.bth.ca.gov and read about "California’s Energy Challenge," which is located under the Spotlight Section on our Homepage.

Maria Contreras-Sweet is the Secretary of the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
