How We Regulate
DFPI oversees a wide range of institutions and processes across the financial services sector to provide maximum protection for Californians. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Financial institutions, such as banks and credit unions
- Nonbank lenders, such as payday and mortgage lenders
- Money transmitters and issuers of payment instruments
- Securities and investment advisers
- Student loan servicers, debt collectors, and other financing products
Our Legislation Division tracks and analyzes bills to ensure consistent interpretation and application of laws that DFPI enforces, while our Legal Division serves as in-house legal counsel for all DFPI programs, analyzing laws, promoting regulations and responding to requests from licensees. Californians can also submit complaints directly to DFPI, which helps us protect consumers, borrowers and investors when they need it most.
