Contact DFPI’s Student Loan Ombudsperson
Your Loan BASICS
If you have specific questions about your federal student loan – about your servicer, your balance, your interest rate, or the timing of payments – log into your account at StudentAid.gov.
For private loans, you can get that information directly from your loan servicer or from your credit report.
Loan servicers are legally required to be prompt and transparent in providing information to you. If they’re not, you may want to submit a complaint with DFPI.
Know your RIGHTS
California has a Student Borrower Bill of Rights, which protects you against abuse and requires loan servicers to be responsive, provide you with accurate information, minimize fees, and give you options so you pay only what you have to.
You can contact the DFPI for questions or inquiries at [email protected] or call toll-free at (866) 275-2677. If you think your rights as a borrower have been violated, we encourage you to submit a complaint via DFPI’s Submit a Complaint page.
